First-time filings for state unemployment benefits lowest in 3 weeks

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits slipped to 305,000 for the week ended Oct. 21 from a revised 310,000 the week before, the government reported Thursday.

Last week's initial claims number was the lowest since the 301,000 reported Sept. 30.

Economists polled by Briefing.com had forecast U.S. jobless claims of 305,000 for the period.

graphicThe four-week moving average of claims, which generally provides a more accurate picture of jobless trends, was 307,500 in the week ended

Oct. 21, up from a revised 303,500 the prior week, the Labor Department said.

Continued claims rose to 2,211,000 for the Oct. 14 week, the latest period for which data are available, from a revised 2,210,000 in the prior period.

Oregon was the only state reporting an increase in claims of more than
