Internet service provider 3Q results better than expected; 4Q loss forecast
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - EarthLink Networks Inc., the second-largest U.S. Internet service provider, Tuesday reported a narrower-than-expected third-quarter loss and said its fourth-quarter loss would be within the range of analysts' estimates.
Atlanta-based EarthLink reported a third-quarter loss of $41.3 million, or 33 cents a diluted share, excluding one-time merger and acquisition costs related to the company's link-up with rival Mindspring. That was an improvement from the $52.5 million, or 45 cents a share, loss excluding one-time items in the year-earlier quarter, and less than the 37 cents a share loss consensus of analysts surveyed by First Call.
Revenue rose 40 percent to $249.3 million. Subscribers grew by more than 900,000 to 4.6 million, while broadband subscribers grew 74 percent from the second quarter to 139,000.
EarthLink said it expects to have 4.7 million to 4.8 million paying customers on the roster by the end of 2000.
The company said it expects to report a fourth-quarter loss of 48 cents to 53 cents a share. The midpoint of the range is slightly above the 49-cent-a-share First Call consensus. Revenue is expected to be between $290 million and $295 million.
EarthLink (ELNK: Research, Estimates) stock rose 3 cents to $6.78 in Tuesday midday trading.
