Set up extra meetings, contact area chamber, but leave time to relax, too

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Before you head off on your next business trip, give some thought to making your trip really pay off by dong some homework in advance.
Plan to make some new business contacts or conduct market research by visiting the local mall or competitor's retail stores, in addition to attending the one meeting you planned to attend.
Set up get-acquainted meetings with potential vendors, suppliers, clients and customers in the city where you are heading.
Go online and look for contact information. Call the local chamber of commerce and economic development office, introduce yourself, tell them about your business and what kind of contacts you are seeking.
As long as you are going to spend thousands of dollars on a business trip, do everything you can to make it really worthwhile.
Finally, try to stay over an extra day or even a few hours to explore the area or just relax.
