Chase tops venture list

Chase Manhattan's venture wing sinks $315 million during third quarter

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Chase Capital Partners, the venture capital branch of New York City-based Chase Manhattan Corp., was the most active venture investor in the third quarter, according to market researcher Venture Economics.

Chase was the top investor in both the number of companies and in terms of the total dollars invested. Chase funded 51 separate companies, committing a total of $315.4 million during the quarter. Chase's average investment was more than $6 million per company.

graphicThe second largest investor during the third quarter was Madison Dearborn Partners, which committed $314.8 million during the quarter. Chicago-based Madison Dearborn, however, invested in only nine companies for an average investment of nearly $35 million.

New Enterprise Associates, based in Menlo Park, Calif., completed the second largest number of deals, with 39 investments totaling $280 million.

Intel Corp. (INTC: Research, Estimates) was the largest corporate investor during the quarter. The Santa Clara, Calif.-based chip maker made 33 investments for a total of $165.7 million.

A year ago, in the third quarter of 1999, the three largest venture investors were TA Associates, Sequoia Capital, and Goldman Sachs & Co.

Newark, N.J.-based Venture Economics based its rankings on third quarter surveys it sent out a number of venture investors. Investors who do not respond to the surveys do not show up on Venture Economics' rankings. graphic
