Four-week average of unemployment filings is highest since January 1999

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits climbed to 336,000 for the week ended Nov. 18 from a revised 329,000 the previous week, the government reported Thursday.

Economists polled by Briefing.com had forecast claims of 320,000 for the period.

graphicThe Labor Department's four-week moving average of claims, which generally provides a more accurate picture of jobless trends, was 330,500 for the period, up from 323,250.

The current four-week average is the highest since the 342,000 average in the Jan. 16, 1999 week.

Continued claims were reported at 2,244,000 for the Nov. 11 week, the latest period for which data are available, up from a revised 2,213,000 in the prior period.

Texas, Minnesota, Kentucky, New York and Arkansas reported an increase in claims of more than 1,000 in the week ended Nov. 11, the latest period for which data are available. graphic
