  • AMAT
  • AMR
  • PFE
  •
"In technology, Applied Materials  (AMAT: Research, Estimates), which is down about 65 percent from its high, AMR Corp.  (AMR: Research, Estimates) in the airlines, and Pfizer (PFE: Research, Estimates) in the pharmaceuticals," said Al Goldman, chief market strategist at A.G. Edwards.

"Applied Material's multiple is bound to -- down to something like 15 times forward-looking earnings. The multiple less in the overall market and it's a great company with dynamic growth prospects."

"Pfizer's a great company, great track record. The economy is slowing, so I think money is going to see defensive growth stocks like the pharmaceuticals and I really don't care what Al Gore thinks about supposedly big drug companies. We're going to have gridlock in Washington and there's not going to be any radical legislation no matter who is in the White House."

Applied Materials is trading up $1.25 to $43.56 with a 52-week high of $115 and a 52-week low of $38.50.

AMR Corp. is trading down 19 cents to $35.81 with a 52-week high of $70 and a 52-week low of $26.

Pfizer is trading down 94 cents to $42.56 and a 52-week high of $49.25 and a 52-week low of $30.

  • WFC
  • CMB
  • FSR
  •
"If you'll look around right now you'll notice Wells Fargo  (WFC: Research, Estimates) on the regional side has been different consistently on the good side. And if you go into the eye of the storm, so to speak, in corporate lending, Chase Manhattan  (CMB: Research, Estimates) has really had a phenomenal record. It wasn't in that last credit that everyone's worried about. You got some hints. So, those are two high ones on my list," said Robert Albertson, president of Pilot Financial.

"I like Firststar (FSR: Research, Estimates) because it's had a very strong history. And it's been criticized now because it's done two back-to-back acquisitions. And yet the management team there is highly respected."

Wells Fargo is trading down $1.31 to $43.69 with a 52-week high of $48.62 and a 52-week low of $31.37.

Chase Manhattan is trading down 88 cents to $37.81 with a 52-week high of $67.16 and a 52-week low of $32.37.

First Star is trading down 19 cents to $18.12 with a 52-week high of $29.50 and a 52-week low of $15.37.

  • GPS
  • ANF
  •
"We like the The Gap  (GPS: Research, Estimates). We see some stabilization of their earnings. They've had a disappointing fall season. Now, when it comes to gifts GAP's an easy place to shop for sweaters, and hats and gloves. So, we think you're going to see the earnings stabilize," said Mark Friedman, senior soft-line retail analyst at Merrill Lynch.

"We think Abercrombie & Fitch  (ANF: Research, Estimates) is turning the women's business around. They have had very good success in the women's area this fall. After struggling a year ago, we think that's heading in the right direction. We also think that their management has got a new concept, although it's really not impacting earnings, Hollister, that's going to give them a long-term growth story. So, we think that Abercrombie faces easy comparisons, attractive valuations, stock is heading in the right direction as this women's business drives the traffic in the store."

The Gap is trading up 56 cents to $24.06 with a 52-week high of $53.75 and a 52-week low of $18.50.

Abercrombie & Fitch is trading up 31 cents to $27.75 with a 52-week high of $32.56 and a 52-week low of $8.  graphic
