Report: Bank concedes mistakes in possible $750M Russian deposits
|
LONDON (CNNfn) - Citigroup Inc. has acknowledged failures in its practices and procedures that allowed $750 million in possibly criminal Russian money to flow through accounts it managed, according to a published report Wednesday.
Losses at the firm's Citibanking unit have come to light following an in-depth probe into some $7 billion of money from Russia of dubious origin that entered the United States through Bank of New York Co., according to the Wall Street Journal Wednesday.
The newspaper said the practices occurred at a single Citibank banch in New York, and are revealed in a letter prepared this week by Citigroup for the General Accounting Office.
According to the letter, a copy of which was seen by the newspaper, some of the Citibank transfers are similar in style to those under investigation at the Bank of New York. The accounts in question were connected to businessman Irakly Kaveladze, who denied any wrongdoing.
Citigroup (C: Research, Estimates), the largest bank in the United States, saw its shares close up 19 cents at $47.63 Tuesday.
