NEW YORK (CNNfn) - To protect profits in the face of a recession, investors often turn to stocks they think can outrun a bear market.

Historically, the best defensive companies are those that make products people can't live without: food, beverages, household goods, pharmaceuticals, tobacco and utilities.

A recent study updated the list to include two more defensive companies and their products.
