First-time filings get closer to critical 300,000 benchmark

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits fell to 306,000 for the week ended Jan. 13 from a revised 343,000 the prior week, the government reported Thursday.

Economists polled by Briefing.com had expected 355,000 claims for the period.

New claims are at their lowest since 301,000 last Sept. 30.

The four-week moving average of claims, thought to give a more accurate picture of jobless trends, was 350,000 for the period, down from a revised 362,250.

Continued claims were reported at 2,373,000 for the week ended Jan. 6, the latest data available, down from a revised 2,574,000 the week prior.

Ten states reported an increase in claims of more than 1,000 in the week ended Jan. 6, the latest period for which the data are available. Among the largest were New York, South Carolina, and North Carolina. graphic
