NEW YORK (CNNfn) - New York City Transit decided to order 350 new subway cars worth nearly $419 million from Canadian firm Bombardier Transit.

Bombardier said Wednesday the NYCT board and Metropolitan Transit Authority decided to extend an option on an existing contract to buy 200 additional passenger cars and order a further 150.

Once the order is completed, the Montreal-based company will have supplied about a third of New York's 6,000-car subway fleet.

"We appreciate the confidence that the MTA/NYCT is demonstrating in Bombardier and we are proud to contribute to the rejuvenation of the fleet of one of the largest rapid transit systems in the world," Jacques Lapare, president of Bombardier Transportation, Mass Transit North America, said.

Transportation conglomerate Bombardier has about 56,000 employees and recorded sales of about $9.4 billion in 2000. graphic
