NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Share of iVillage rallied 38 percent after the company agreed to buy rival Women.com Networks, expanding its reach in the online women's market. But CacheFlow, whose systems boost Web site performance, tumbled on news that its quarterly losses widened.
Tuesday's winners
iVillage (IVIL: Research, Estimates) up 66 cents to $2.38. The company said it would buy Women.com Networks (WOMN: Research, Estimates) in a stock deal valued at $47 million. iVillage also said its fourth-quarter losses narrowed to $9.8 million from $26 million in the year-ago period. Woman.com stock finished unchanged at 73 cents.
Outback Steakhouse (OSI: Research, Estimates) up $3.47 to $26.20. The company, which runs 669 steakhouses, said sales at stores opened at least a year rose 7.9 percent during the four-week period ended Jan. 27. Outback said the gains were helped by easy comparisons to the year-earlier period, when bad weather cut into sales.
Uproar (UPRO: Research, Estimates) up 94 cents to $2.94. The maker of interactive games received a $140 million cash buyout offer from Flipside, a unit of Vivendi Universal (V: Research, Estimates).
JDS Uniphase (JDSU: Research, Estimates) up $2 to $52, SDL (SDLI: Research, Estimates) up $15.63 to $201. Fiber-optics equipment maker Nortel Networks (NT: Research, Estimates) agreed to buy a laser plant from fiber-optics firm JDS Uniphase at a cost of up to $3 billion, a deal that would clear the way for Justice Department approval of JDS's $17.6 billion purchase of SDL.
Walt Disney (DIS: Research, Estimates) up $1.18 to $31.61. The entertainment company reported fiscal first-quarter earnings of 16 cents a share, beating expectations by a penny.
TriQuint Semiconductor (TQNT: Research, Estimates) up $1.50 to $34. The communications chip maker reported fourth-quarter earnings that beat Wall Street estimates.
Univision (UVN: Research, Estimates) up $2.75 to $42.75. The Spanish-language broadcasting company will replace Union Carbide (UK: Research, Estimates) on the S&P 500 index after Union Carbide merges with Dow Chemical (DOW: Research, Estimates).
Egreetings Network (EGRT: Research, Estimates) up 19 cents to 81 cents. The online unit of greeting card publisher American Greetings (AM: Research, Estimates) is buying competitor Egreetings.
Tuesday's losers
CacheFlow (CFLO: Research, Estimates) down $3.94 to $10.06. The company, whose systems boost Web site performance, said losses widened to $18.3 million, or 49 cents per share in the fiscal third quarter, from a loss of $7.2 million, or 24 cents, in the year-ago period.
Cutter & Buck (CBUK: Research, Estimates) down $2.44 to $8.50. The golf apparel maker said it will report a greater-than-expected 7-to-10-cent-per-share loss in its fiscal third quarter due to a dropoff in sales amid a slow economy and a cold Southern winter.
eToys (ETYS: Research, Estimates) down 9 cents to 19 cents. The struggling Internet toy seller has told the remaining members of its staff they will be out of a job this April, yet another sign the company's days may be numbered.
InfoSpace (INSP: Research, Estimates) down 59 cents to $3.66. The provider of content and services to Web sites and wireless services is cutting 20 percent of its staff, or about 250 workers.
Applied Micro Circuits (AMCC: Research, Estimates) down $9.31 to $55.06. The communications chip maker repeated its guidance for the March and June quarters, but added it was "on alert" because of some order cancellations.
J.D. Edwards (JDEC: Research, Estimates) down $1.38 to $13.25. The enterprise software company late Monday said it would report a loss in its fiscal first quarter due to inefficiencies in its sales and services divisions; analysts expected a profit.
Covista Communications (CVST: Research, Estimates) down 91 cents to $4.88. The long-distance telecom company said its board has approved, in principle, the private sale of additional equity to raise up to $8 million.
