Software giant to allow some chip makers to modify code for chips - report

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Microsoft Corp. is set to allow some chip makers to modify its software to make specialized chips for use in factory robots, "smart" refrigerators and other products, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.
Intel Corp. and MIPS Technologies Inc. will be among those allowed to develop the chips for devices running versions of Microsoft's operating systems, the newspaper said. The embedded chips can be used in products ranging from the factory robots to refrigerators that could keep track of when a person runs out of milk or eggs, the paper said.
Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer is expected to unveil the plan Tuesday at a conference in Las Vegas, the report said. Ballmer will also talk about plans to use the company's Windows NT software in the casino slot machines of Bally Gaming & Systems, owned by Alliance Gaming Corp., it added.
Microsoft (MSFT: Research, Estimates) stock rose $1.12 to $61.94 Monday after the software company said it would rename its Office and Windows products to bolster its push toward Internet-based computing.
