Initial filings' 4-week average at highest level since July 1998 in latest week

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - The number of Americans filing for first-time unemployment benefits was unchanged last week from a revised total of 375,000 in the previous week, the U.S. Labor Department said Thursday, suggesting the labor market continues to ease.

First-time claims for the week ended March 10 were above expectations from Wall Street economists, who had estimated new claims totaled 365,000, according to Briefing.com.

Jobless claims were originally reported at 370,000 for the week ended March 3.

    New York reported layoffs mostly in the service industry.
 		   
The widely-watched four-week moving average for claims rose to 364,250 last week. That was the highest level since July 11, 1998, underscoring the fact that the sharp slowdown in economic growth is forcing layoffs at many firms.

New York reported 9,908 more layoffs, mostly in the service industry, while California saw layoffs in the trade and service industry. graphic
