NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Former Clinton National Security Advisor Samuel "Sandy" Berger has been named a senior adviser to Wall Street brokerage firm Lehman Bros. Inc., the company announced Friday.

Berger is also the chairman of Stonebridge International, a Washington, D.C.-based strategy firm that provides industry analysis, and expertise on regional and international marketplace to the business community.

The firm will advise Lehman Brothers (LEH: down $1.48 to $76.02, Research, Estimates) on business transactions and executing strategies in key markets worldwide.

graphic"Given the increasingly competitive global marketplace, successful companies require a sophisticated and up-to-date understanding of trends and events, their likely impact and the choices they face," said Berger in a press release. "We provide that essential perspective and the ability to help shape and execute results-oriented strategies."

Berger also served as deputy national security advisor during Clinton's first term and as deputy director of the State Department's Policy Planning staff from 1977 to 1980.

"Sandy's unsurpassed experience working with governments, industries, and businesses worldwide clearly makes him an ideal choice to help us further expand the Lehman Brothers' footprint in the global marketplace," Chief Executive Richard Fuld said in a statement. graphic
