According to a study released by the Department of Transportation (DOT) Thursday, gas mileage for 2001-model U.S. vehicles is the lowest since 1980. The study says that among the vehicle fleets, GM and DaimlerChrysler light trucks fail to meet the current federal mileage standards. Bush's energy plan offers U.S. automakers a tax incentive to develop a fleet of fuel-efficient hybrid cars.

From the Interpreter's Desk, CNNfn's Chris Huntington takes a look at the DOT study. graphic
