$23.5B merger between Lucent and Alcatel called off, no reason given

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - France's Alcatel SA and Lucent Technologies called off their $23.5 billion merger Tuesday, ending weeks of speculation.

Discussions between the two telecommunications firms have not resulted in any agreement and talks have been terminated, the firms said in a joint statement. The firms did not cite any particular reason for the breakup in negotiations. graphic
