So, how do you like that SUV? With gas prices rising, you might be liking
it less since, most of the time, "off road" means stopped at the gas pump.
You'll notice that all five of our "worst" cars are sport-utility vehicles.
We didn't plan it that way. When we put together our lists of gas mileage
overachievers and underperformers taken from Money's overall database of
2001 cars, we decided to look only at gasoline-powered vehicles costing
under $65,000. This is how they shook out.
Since gas mileage isn't the only thing to consider when buying a car, I've
got plenty of nice things to say about some of the gas hogs, and some
not-so-nice things to say about some of the fuel-misers.
One note: Some folks might question the inclusion of our top two gas-mileage
cars, since we supposedly restricted ourselves to "gasoline powered vehicles."
These are hybrid cars that rely on a combination of regular internal combustion
power and a battery powered electric motor. But the batteries that power the
electric motor get their juice from the car's gasoline engine so they are,
ultimately, gasoline powered vehicles fair and square.
