NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Kmart Corp. plans to offer unlimited Internet access for $8.95 a month through its BlueLight Internet service, the No. 3 U.S. retailer said Monday.

The Troy, Mich.-based company said the service, offered through its online shopping site BlueLight.com, will be "the lowest-price major Internet service provider (ISP) available to consumers."

BlueLight.com, which has 7 million subscribers, said customers can earn free months of Internet service by buying non-clearance items at its site; and, if customers sign up before Sept. 1, their first three monthly payments will be $6.95.

"Americans shouldn't have to pay nearly $25 each month for the privilege of surfing the Internet and shopping online," said Heidi Gibson, general manager of ISP at BlueLight.com.

Kmart said its Web access service will be cheaper than that of America Online, which is operated by CNNfn parent company AOL Time Warner (AOL: up $0.57 to $45.71, Research, Estimates) and EarthLink Inc. (ELNK: down $0.22 to $17.13, Research, Estimates).

Kmart (KM: up $0.04 to $11.26, Research, Estimates) shares were up slightly Monday morning on the New York Stock Exchange. graphic
