NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Communications chip maker Motorola Inc. said Wednesday it will close two wafer fabrication lines at its Mesa, Ariz., plant over the next two years, a move that's expected to result in an undisclosed number of job losses.

The company said the phase-out plans for the MOS-6 and Bipolar Manufacturing Center will affect about 1,200 employees, but that it expects a majority of those workers to be offered positions at other facilities in the Phoenix metropolitan area.  The MOS-6 line makes products for wireless communications and infrastructure customers, while the Bipolar line makes products for automotive customers, Motorola (MOT: Research, Estimates)  said.

"This decision is a continuation of our manufacturing renewal process to improve asset management by investing in advanced technologies and consolidating our older production facilities," said Chris Belden, a Motorola vice president and director of technology and manufacturing.

Motorola shares fell 9 cents to $18.41 Tuesday. graphic
