NEW YORK (CNNfn) - For those holding Powerball tickets to Wednesday's drawing, chances are that the tickets will end up in the trash – estimates of winning are one in 80 million. The chances for winning most lotteries are not much better, about one in 12 million-to-14 million.

Lotteries do offer large payoffs, but repeated playing can take a toll on personal finances. Rhode Island residents spend the most per capita on lotteries – $68 per month.
