Companies such as Fannie Mae (FNM: Research, Estimates), Freddie Mac (FRE: Research, Estimates) and the National Association of Home Builders said the goal of this industry-wide commitment is to provide continued relief and financial support for the rebuilding of lower Manhattan.
"The housing and mortgage finance industry stands united and ready to help the country cope with this terrible tragedy," said a joint statement from the companies.
Thousands of people remain buried in the rubble in lower Manhattan, where the World Trade Center's two 110-story twin towers stood only a week ago, and smoke still rose from the site as firefighters, construction and iron workers and others worked in the rescue and recovery mission.
Other companies participate in this joint relief effort include the National Association of Realtors, the Mortgage Bankers Association of America, the National Multi Housing Council, the Independent Community Bankers of America and the Homeownership Alliance.
