Unionized field workers to be hit at telecom service provider.

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - BellSouth Corp. joined the list of companies announcing pre-holiday job cuts Friday when it said it would shave 1,200 technical field workers from its staff.
The positions being eliminated are union represented. The company said they represent about 2 percent of its 53,000 unionized employees, and about 1 percent of its overall staff. The company announced in October it would cut 3,000 management staff, most from its headquarters in Atlanta.
"The reductions we are announcing are tied to an economy that has slowed significantly over the course of the past year and to a resulting drop-off in the volume of demand work we have been experiencing," said a statement from Rod Odom, a BellSouth executive vice president.
The announcement brings to nearly 25,000 the number of job cuts revealed by major companies so far this week.
