Gay cable channel in works

MTV, Showtime explore potential of network dedicated to gay programming.

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - MTV Networks and cable network Showtime are joining forces to create a new television channel for gay viewers.
The two companies, both owned by media company Viacom (VIA: up $0.02 to $45.38, Research, Estimates), said Thursday they "are exploring a new network dedicated to programming for the gay and lesbian audience."
MTV and Showtime said they are "currently examining the potential and exploring distribution models and prospects as well as programming elements."
Showtime has recently seen success with its series "Queer as Folk," based on the British show of the same name, which is about the lives of gay men and women in Pittsburgh.
