HOUSTON (CNN) - Former Enron executives Jeffrey Skilling and Rebecca Carter were married over the weekend at his home in Houston, a spokeswoman for Skilling told CNN Wednesday.
Both Skilling and Carter -- who tied the knot Saturday -- have been divorced and have children from previous marriages. They began dating in March 1998 after their divorces in 1997.
Skilling is the former Enron CEO who has testified before Congress twice in recent weeks about the company's collapse and his role in corporate operations.
The relationship had corporate roots. "I would like to ask Rebecca Carter out on a date but I wanted to make sure it's all right with all of you," Skilling told Enron's board of directors in the spring of 1998, spokeswoman Judy Leon told the Associated Press. "Well, the only thing wrong here is that she's going to turn you down," cracked one of the board members, Leon said.
The prediction proved wrong. They became engaged when Skilling decided to leave Enron, which he did last August.
At Enron, Carter reported directly to former Chairman Kenneth Lay. She held two titles -- senior vice president for board communications and corporate secretary.
When asked where the new Mrs. Skilling is working, Leon said she is currently exploring her options.
The ceremony was described as a very small private affair. The Skillings are now on a honeymoon at an undisclosed location.
