Frugal living in the Far East

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Packing up your family and moving to another country isn't easy. But for Jackie and Donald Franklin, moving to South Korea eight months ago was an opportunity to see another part of the world and add to their already impressive nest egg, which now stands at nearly $730,000.

"Before we moved our goal for saving was $1,000 a month. Now our goal is to put away $3,000-to-$5,000 a month," said Jackie, whose job as a computer specialist for the U.S. Army relocated the family from Las Vegas to Uijongbu, a town north of Seoul, the nation's capital. Although Jackie is a civilian employee, the government pays for virtually all of the family's expenses. In fact, the only costs not covered are food and entertainment.

Life on the move is nothing new to the couple and their daughters Andrea, 17, and Renee, 14. Until five years ago Donald was commander for Navy, a job that took the family all over the country. "For 20 years Don was on active duty and the family always followed him," said Jackie, noting that the family planned to settle down in Las Vegas after Donald's retirement but was bit by the travel bug after living there for four years. "Now we're overseas for the first time, but on my assignment."

Although the Franklins will surely boost their net worth while living rent-free for a few years, they are no strangers to the practice of saving. Donald, who has his master's degree in financial management and now works as a budget analyst for the U.S. Army, says it was actually Jackie's influence that got them investing early. In fact, when he and Jackie, now ages 48 and 47, met and married two decades ago Jackie already owned a house, a car and mutual funds. "All I brought to the marriage was my television set," Donald quipped.

After working with a financial adviser who had them investing in everything from gold to rental properties and limited partnerships, the couple eventually took over their own investments. "During the 1990s I invested in aggressive funds from Janus and Invesco. But they got smacked pretty good and I decided to back off and spread things out a little bit," said Donald, who also dabbled in individual stocks but says he's done with that now. "A 15 percent average return would be great, but right now I'm just looking for 8-to-10 percent."

The couple own nine different mutual funds worth more than $356,000 in the taxable portion of their portfolio, which includes such growth holdings as Wasatch Small Cap Growth and Wasatch Core Growth, value holdings like Janus Strategic Value Fund and PBHG Clipper, as well as a balanced fund and government bond fund. They also have about $353,000 invested in Roth IRAs and $18,000 in a money market fund and checking account. Their daughters, meanwhile, each have their own mutual funds worth about $40,890 combined.

Donald says he typically learns about different funds in financial publications and then does his own research on the portfolios and their managers. One recent addition to the Franklin's collection of funds is ABM AMRO Talon Mid Cap fund, which invests in a blend of growth and value stocks.

With their two salaries and Donald's monthly military pension, which is $2,300 after taxes and increases with cost of living, they bring home about $8,000 a month. While they save more than half of this money, they devote a good part of it to family field trips. "Travel is one of our primary goals," said Jackie, noting that since moving to South Korea they've already visited China, Malaysia, Australia and Thailand.

In fact, the Franklins hope to retire in seven-to-eight years and devote most of their time to globetrotting. "We have no clue where we'll end up living, but we think we want a summer home near a lake and a winter home somewhere warm," said Jackie.

If they keep saving as they have, the Franklins should have no problem finding a nice place to call home between trips.  Top of page
