NEW YORK (CNN) - I've been trying to figure out where I stand on the National Council of Women's Organizations' fight with the Augusta National Golf Club.... I find myself both fascinated and annoyed by the whole thing between Martha Burk and Hootie Johnson. I'm seldom neutral on any issue... but I've finally come down against the Women's council, which should in my opinion be more concerned with the fact that a third of all babies in this country are being born out of wedlock... and against Augusta, which should just acquiesce to reality and understand that as Chekov said, if there be emancipation at all, let there be equity in all things. The council can then get back to important work...and Augusta back to fun and golf. In the interests of full disclosure, I'm married more than two decades to a lovely, bright woman who can on extremely rare occasions beat me at golf. And when she does so, it's with great gusto and little grace. To tell you the truth, I'm not always a big fan of equity between the sexes.
Both of my sons beat me like a drum, and I'm sure soon my two teenage daughters will join the boys in the humiliate-Dad-on-the-course circle. I love golf, and will play anywhere anytime... so long as I play with people who are good company and in good humor.... The nice folks at Golf Digest this month were good enough to feature my precision putting in their magazine, presumably in part as instruction to their readers on how not to putt. The point is I'm pro-Golf, and I've even been fortunate enough to play Augusta. I have friends who are members. They're all good guys. Hootie and Augusta have every right to be exclusive... but they have no right to be exclusionary. And now I can go home to my wife and daughters.
