Time to play
Hottest toys this year include Chicken Dance Elmo, Harry Potter Slime Chamber, trade mag says.

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - The economy is shaky, the markets are down. But your kids still want the hottest toys this holiday as sure as another Harry Potter sequel is on the horizon.

And Toy Wishes magazine thinks it's figured out what toys those will be this year. The publishers revealed what they say are the 12 "hottest toys" Tuesday at the International Toy Center in New York. A new Barbie doll and a Harry Potter Slime Chamber are likely to be among the most in demand and hardest to find this year, the publishers said.

Christopher Byrne, "The Toy Guy," as he's known in the business, is a toy marketer who helped compile this year's hottest toys list. Although he says kids didn't actually test out the toys, they were observed playing with similar items or older version from a year ago, a formula he says has proved successful in the past.

The toys are chosen for their play value as well as value for the money, and their ability to be promoted, such as toys tied to a movie release

"The advances that have been made in technology have really allowed the toys to do more for less money," said Byrne, 46, who liked to play with Matchbox cars and "anything that blew up" as a kid.

Though industry executives say these toys will be on the shelves in time for Christmas, there may not be enough to last through the season because of the lockout of the West Coast ports.

President Bush said Tuesday he will seek a court order to force operators of 29 ports from Seattle to San Diego to reopen to dockworkers, whose union moments earlier had agreed to go back to work Wednesday under a 30-day contract extension. The management union had yet to respond to that extension.

Peter Felberbaum, executive vice president for licensing and marketing at KIDdesigns Inc., which makes toys for Mattel and others, said the company had many containers full of inventory slated for the holiday season stuck in West Coast ports.

And NeuroSmith, which makes Musini, one of this year's hottest toys, has enough toys to start the holidays, but there could be shortages because of the lockout, spokeswoman Amy Williams said. The company, which is based in Long Beach, Calif. and whose merchandise was about to be released from the ports when the lockout occurred, may resort to air freight to get its products delivered in time for Christmas.

Retailers, who have been struggling with lower sales all year due mainly to economic jitters, depend on the holiday season in November and December for at least half of their sales and profits for the entire year. Though consumers have been spending less at the stores, chances are they're not going to deny their kids at the holidays, said Jim Silver, who co-publishes Toy Wishes with Gareb Shamus.
