NEW YORK (CNN) - Earlier in the broadcast, we reported that the analysis of the sniper by every so-called television news expert was apparently wrong. I want now to acknowledge who was right... and those to whom we should all express our gratitude. The law enforcement agencies of the DC area did as much as we could reasonably ask, under the most frightening and frustrating conditions one can imagine. And so did the terrorism task force, and the FBI and the ATF. Their investigation was conducted under immense pressure, scrutiny and certainly fear for the safety of the public.

And we should thank a truck driver who was only five runs short of retiring when he spotted the Chevrolet Caprice that law enforcement wanted in connection with the sniper killings. Ron Lancz, who says he's not a hero, noticed the car in a rest area in Maryland and called 911.
The members of all the law enforcement agencies who've worked on this case may not be heroes, either...but they're certainly deserving of our deepest appreciation...our thanks for their work in the public interest well done.
