It's been quite a week for the president and his party. The Republicans made history by winning back the Senate and holding onto the House, and the UN Security Council unanimously approved the resolution to disarm Iraq.... and on Wall Street, a fifth straight week of gains for the Dow.
The Democrats lost control of the Senate. But Tuesday's vote only gave back to the Republicans what Senator Jim Jeffords took away when he defected from the party to join the Democrats a year and a half ago.
So, the Democrats shouldn't be too hard on their leadership. Many Democrats seem to enjoy all the recriminations and the blame game, but the fact is they haven't really lost anything they had won at the polls. In fact, the really big loser is Senator Jeffords.
I know everybody's talking about a national split vote, and a partisan divide that separates the country, but I think they've lost a little perspective.... The Republicans have only 51 seats in the Senate, and we'll be governed from the center of the political spectrum as we most often are in this country. So, while many in the media, and many Democrats are talking about a split vote, a country divided almost evenly between Democrats and Republicans, I think what we are experiencing is balance and proportionality. We're not politically divided, we're politically balanced... and that seems to me to be a very good thing, indeed.
