NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Harvard appears to be on the verge of squandering its legacy as the preeminent educational institution in this country. First, English professors had to re-invite an Irish poet to the school, just a week after his invitation to speak at Harvard had been cancelled because of his strong anti-Israeli views.
Now, Harvard Law School is considering a speech code... a code that would ban offensive speech. The Black Law Students Association called for the policy, citing chronic racist language at the school. I abhor racism in any form, but give me a break... a school that trains some of the nation's top attorneys should not for even a moment consider any restriction on free speech... and the sensitive little darlings who would even seek such protection from the slings and arrows of language, but who would try to take such power over the rights of others in the guise of precious tones, should be ashamed of themselves. And they should take to heart the words of one of the most distinguished graduates of Harvard Law School, Louis Brandeis... who said that when government seeks to cure the evil it associates with given speech, "the remedy to be applied is more speech, not enforced silence."
I believe political correctness is beginning to ebb in this country, thank God, and Americans are rediscovering the joy of plain talk. Harvard really should try to keep up with the times...while protecting a timeless First Amendment.
