NEW YORK (CNN) - Our friends to the North often have to put up with our national idiosyncrasies down here and generally do so in good humor, with only rare lapses. And we generally reciprocate.
In fact, we're the best of trading partners, unless we're talking about lumber or certain varieties of fish. But I'm concerned tonight that a few Canadians may be buying an American export that could be as deleterious to their national health as it is ours.
The Royal Canadian Mint now has a commercial promoting the sales of coins with the musical standard The Twelve Days of Christmas, which they changed to the 12 days of giving, as if that would make coins more marketable to people of other than Christian faith.
And when Toronto put up its 50-foot tree outside city hall, city officials declared to be not a Christmas tree, but a holiday tree. After an uproar, the Mayor of Toronto was forced to clear the matter up and declare the tree to be actually a Christmas tree.
Political correctness is waning in this country, but we still have a hard fight ahead of us. To all our friends in Canada, please don't make us contend with another front in this war against silliness. We're counting on you... as always.
