NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Online banking can help consumers cut down on identity theft, according to a new report released by Haviland Strategy and Research.
Not only can paying bills online cut down on corporate costs associated with producing and mailing paper statements, but it also lowers cases of fraud associate with mail theft, according to CNNfn's Valerie Morris.

Online banking also encourages consumers to monitor their accounts more closely, she said. More than 10 million people last year were victims of identity theft -- and more 50 percent of identity-theft cases have been identified by consumers themselves, Morris said on CNNfn.
In her report, Morris suggested considering privacy, conflict resolution, support services, insurance and fees when shopping around for an online bank.
