"The contract is for six years. We'll see after that," Adu told CNN/Money Thursday. "It has always been a dream of mine to play in the British Premier League for a team like Manchester United."

Adu was courted by Manchester United and some other European leagues before signing with MLS this week.

The U.S. soccer league would be in position to receive a large payment from a European team that wanted to sign Adu before the end of his six-year contract.

Terms of Adu's contract with D.C. United have not been disclosed, but it is believed that he accepted less money than some of the European teams were offering, even though he'll be among the best-paid players in a league where salaries top out at a reported $600,000 a year.

"I'm very young. This gives me a perfect opportunity to play for a good team and be close to home, to grow as a player," Adu said. Adu lives in Potomac, Md., a suburb of Washington, D.C.

Adu says that he's followed the MLS and gone to D.C. United games when he's home, although his travel schedule has prevented him from seeing many games.

As far as watching games on television, he says he watches more overseas games than his new league.

"I love watching Champions' League games. That comes on at perfect time for me," he said. "I don't see a lot of MLS."  Top of page
