This is the second major recall in the past week for GM. The world's biggest automaker said Friday it was recalling about 1.8 million cars to fix an electrical defect that can spark fires in the steering column.
In the latest recall, GM (GM: Research, Estimates) said the wipers failed after water entered the windshield wiper module. To fix the problem, dealers will cover a vent hole in the module with a patch and inspect circuits and electrical connectors for signs of water or corrosion.
The vehicles involved are 2002 Chevrolet TrailBlazer and TrailBlazer EXT, GMC Envoy and Envoy XL, as well as Oldsmobile Bravada SUVs built between October and June 2002. Some 2003 TrailBlazer and TrailBlazer EXT, Envoy and Envoy XL and Bravada SUVs built between April and November 2002 are also included. Some 2002 Isuzu Ascenders are also involved.
Of the 636,000 vehicles, 580,000 are registered in the United States. Owners of affected vehicles will be notified starting in the third quarter of this year, GM said.
Owners with wiper problems should bring the vehicle to a dealer for inspection and repair, GM's announcement said. Most owners will probably not experience any wiper problems and should wait for the recall notice before bringing their vehicle to a dealer, according to the announcement.
