March 22, 2004: 12:58 PM EST

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - While they may be newcomers to this year's Fortune 500, the additions on the list of America's largest companies include some well-known tech names and industry leaders.

There are 26 newcomers to the Fortune 500, headlined by Advanced Micro Devices (AMD: Research, Estimates), Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY: Research, Estimates), Medco Health Solutions (MHS: Research, Estimates), Monsanto (MON: Research, Estimates) and Travelers Property Casualty (TAP.A: Research, Estimates). Medco Health Solutions tops the list of new additions coming in at 41 with $34.3 billion in revenue. Medco jumped into the top 50 after it was spun off from Merck & Co. (MRK: up $0.11 to $43.88, Research, Estimates) in 2003.

"Medco Health employees feel a great sense of pride and also a deep sense of responsibility to continually raise the bar on our performance in meeting the need of our clients," said Medco's CEO David Snow in a statement.

Making the Fortune 500 raises a company's profile. But it can also bring added pressure to remain on the list.

"While it brings the company a sense of credibility, once you're on the list falling off can be a detriment, so there is some additional pressure" said Jon Lundberg, president of Bristol, Tenn.-based The Corporate Image.

The companies that failed to make this year's list include mortgage finance firm Freddie Mac (FRE: Research, Estimates), Computer Associates (CA: Research, Estimates), troubled physical rehabilitation firm HealthSouth and grocery distributor Fleming Companies.  Top of page
