McDonald's to expand DVD rentals
Report: No. 1 restaurant chain plans trial in 150 Denver stores after tests in Las Vegas, D.C..
May 24, 2004: 7:03 AM EDT

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - McDonald's is looking to take dinner and a movie to a new level.

The world's largest fast food chain will begin testing DVD rental kiosks in all its 105 stores in Denver after it received positive reactions from smaller tests in Las Vegas and Washington, according to a report in Monday's USA Today.

McDonald's (MCD: Research, Estimates) will rent the DVDs for $1 a day and they can be returned at any of its locations, the paper reported. DVD rentals at Blockbuster, the largest movie rental chain, cost $3.99 for three days and must be returned to the same store.

Mats Lederhausen, managing director of McDonald's Ventures, told the paper the company isn't looking to make money from the DVD rentals. "We are doing everything we can to be more relevant with everyday consumers," he said.

The McDonald's kiosks will stock the top 30 DVD titles, which account for about 80 percent of all DVD rentals. The company should know by the end of the summer if the project is successful, according to the USA Today report.  Top of page
