NEW YORK (CNN/Money) -
While oil prices set record high prices over the last week, gasoline prices fell slightly across the United States, highlighted by a drop of nearly 2 percent in California, a government agency reported.
The price for a regular gallon of unleaded gas fell 0.2 cents to average $1.875 last week, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA). Last week's drop chipped away at a gain of almost 25 cents compared to a year earlier, the EIA reported Monday.
Prices remained highest on the West Coast, and in particular California, which averaged $2.055 a gallon last week. That was down 3.7 cents from the previous week, but up from 13.5 cents from a year ago.
New England and the Central Atlantic states also reported high prices of $1.92 per gallon, down about a cent from the previous week.
The Midwest and Gulf states were the only regions to report price gains last week, with the Midwest posting a 1.5 cent rise and Gulf states rising 0.2 cents, according to the EIA.
Crude oil prices reached a record of above $46 a barrel last week, and some experts think it's only a matter of time before prices at the pump follow.
