NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - The number of Americans filing for unemployment assistance rose by 16,000 last week, the government reported, coming in below economists' estimates.
Initial claims for unemployment insurance rose to 333,000 in the week ended Sept. 11, up from a revised 317,000 the previous week. Wall Street had expected 343,000 claims, according to Briefing.com.
The previous week's figures were skewed slightly lower as the glut of applicants made its way through the system after Hurricane Charley hit Florida last month, the Labor Department reported.
That glut may still be working its way through the system, however, as Florida led the country with 4,005 claims, almost double the second-place state.
The department said that Hurricanes Charley and Frances had no impact on the latest week's figures.
The four-week moving average for jobless claims, which smoothes out the weekly fluctuations, came in at 338,000, unchanged from the previous week.
Continuing claims, covering people who have already received a week of assistance, fell to 2.882 million in the week ended Sept. 4, up from 2.885 the previous week.
