Kraft to team with South Beach Diet
No. 1 U.S. food company to get South Beach seal on some of its popular food brands.
September 29, 2004: 4:38 PM EDT

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Kraft Foods is about to get the seal of approval from the South Beach diet on some of its products, including Kraft cheese, Philadelphia Cream Cheese, Cool Whip and Planters peanuts, according to a published report.

USA Today reported that Kraft, the largest U.S. food company, will reveal details of a new marketing push Monday that will tie several of its brands to the popular carb-conscious diet plan.

The paper said that Kraft will give away a 90-page South Beach Diet Recipe Sampler to buyers of three craft products. The paper said more than 8 million copies of "The South Beach Diet" book have been sold by cardiologist Arthur Agatson.

Many of the Kraft products that will carry the South Beach seal include low-fat or no-fat versions of the products, such as Philadelphia Light, the fat-free cream cheese, reduced fat Triscuits crackers, low-fat or no-fat Kraft cheese and the fat-free Cool Whip desert topping.

Other Kraft products that are to have the South Beach seal include Louis Rich turkey and chicken cuts, Light n' Lively cottage cheese, Jello-O sugar-free gelatin, Grey Poupon mustard and Crystal Light beverages.

The paper said there are also tentative plans for Kraft and South Beach to team up meal-replacement bars and shakes.

A number of companies, from Coca-Cola to Krispy Kreme Doughnuts to Interstate Bakeries, maker of Wonder Bread and Twinkies, have said the growing popularity of low-carb diets has hurt their sales. Interstate Bakeries filed for bankruptcy court protection last week.  Top of page
