NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - DaimlerChrysler's Dodge division has released the first official sketch of the upcoming Dodge Charger.

The Charger is planned for the 2006 model year. It is based on the same engineering platform as the Dodge Magnum wagon and Chrysler 300 sedan.

It has been known for some time that the new Charger would be a four-door sedan. In the sketch, the design mimics a two-door coupe but the lines of the rear doors are visible cutting through the bulges ahead of the rear wheel wells.

The original Dodge Charger. which debuted in 1966, was a two-door coupe. The car was Dodge's entry in the so-called "Muscle Car" category. In it's earliest incarnations, the Charger was available with Chrysler's high-powered Hemi engine.

The new version will be available with DaimlerChrysler's modern version of the Hemi V-8 engine, as are the 300C and Magnum. The new Hemi, as offered in Dodge and Chrsyler cars, is a 340 horsepower 5.7 liter engine.

The new Charger will officially debut at the 2005 Detroit Auto Show in January.  Top of page
