Texas Instruments takes TV wireless
Report: Chip manufacturer to launch device that will enable digital TV broadcasts over cell phones.
October 21, 2004: 8:43 AM EDT

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Texas Instruments is expected to unveil a chip Thursday that will allow cell phones to receive digital television broadcasts over a wireless network, according to a published report.

Mobile phones have made the push into music, video games and photography, and the new chip from TI will combine the functions of a TV tuner, signal demodulator and channel decoder in a single device to bring TV to phones, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The chip is expected to display as many as 30 frames per second, twice the rate that some of the best phones today display video clips, the Journal reported.

Texas Instruments (Research) hasn't said what mobile phone manufacturers will provide the phones, but Nokia has already displayed products with TV capabilities, the newspaper reported.

The phones are not expected to launch until 2006, but Crown Castle International (Research), which builds wireless network towers, has already acquired a broadcast spectrum with wireless TV capabilities, according to the Journal.  Top of page
