NEW YORK (CNN/Money) -
McDonald's may soon be going upscale with its coffee, according to a report Monday.
USA Today said the world's largest fast food company is set to test and then offer premium java at all of its 13,000 restaurants either later this year or early 2006.
No further details, such as the coffee brand, the price, or an exact roll-out date, were available.
The move is seen as an attempt to capture a share of the $8.9 billion speciality coffee market after the number of adults drinking coffee has nearly doubled in the last four years. Analysts said it could boost the company's sales by 2 percent a year as coffee is the main attraction to a breakfast menu.
Although it could force competitors to follow suit, Burger King declined comment to USA Today and Wendy's (Research) told the paper it had no plans to change its coffee.
Both 7-Eleven (Research) and Dunkin' Donuts have added gourmet coffee in the last two years and both have seen healthy sales, although analysts said McDonald's move into the market will pressure those companies.
