American cruisers: GM unveils big sedans
Cadillac DTS and Buick Lucerne designed to appeal to those who want size as well as performance.

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - General Motors unveiled two new large luxury sedans at the Chicago Auto Show Wednesday.

The Cadillac DTS -- a stretched version of which carried President George W. Bush in his inaugural parade -- carries the signature edgy styling of the company's flagship luxury marque. The front-wheel drive car has a 4.6-liter V-8 engine and four-speed transmission. The engine is available in two configurations, one producing an estimated 290 horsepower, the other an estimated 275.

The chassis is engineered to give a smooth, quiet ride, GM said. Inside, the DTS's seats are also engineered for maximum comfort, the company said. Slightly over 17 feet long, the DTS has about 19 cubic feet of trunk space.

GM also unveiled the similarly-sized Buick Lucerne, the first Buick in a decade to offer a V-8 engine. A 195-horsepower V-6 engine will be standard in the car, but a 275-horsepower V-8 will be offered as an option.

Ride quality and handling in the Lucerne are managed by the same Magnetic Ride Control technology GM uses in the Corvette sports car. That system automatically varies the stiffness of the car's suspension depending on conditions and driving style.

"This combination of useful technology and luxury features will appeal to a wide range of customers who value high levels of safety, quality, performance and comfort in a graceful and elegant vehicle," said Buick General Manager John Larson.

Both vehicles have GM's new dual-depth front airbag. The new airbags, which are installed in front of the front passenger seat, can open to their full size or to a smaller size depending on the severity of the impact, the position of the seat and whether the occupant is wearing a seatbelt.  Top of page
