NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Billionaire financier George Soros has joined one of the groups bidding to purchase the Washington Nationals baseball team, the Washington Post reported Thursday.

The paper quoted entrepreneur Jonathan Ledecky as saying Soros had joined his bid for the team, one of eight or nine groups of investors expected to make a bid to Major League Baseball. A spokesman for Soros did not comment to the paper on Ledecky's statement.

Soros is just one of the high profile individuals reportedly interested in buying the National League franchise.

The Post has reported that former Secretary of State Colin Powell has joined the a group led by Fred Malek and Jeffrey Zients, while Sallie Mae (Research) Chairman Albert Lord took over the William Collins-led group Tuesday.

Stan Kasten, who ran the Atlanta Braves as well as Atlanta hockey and basketball teams for CNN/Money parent Time Warner Inc. (Research), is in the process of filing his bid, according to the paper.

Soros is worth an estimated $7.2 billion, making him the 55th richest man in the world, according to Forbes magazine. In addition to his business success, he is a leading contributor to charities and political groups that support Democratic candidates.

"The Soros family shares my belief that the Washington Nationals are a community trust that can serve as a positive platform for the economic development of the inner city," Ledecky told the Post.

The Nationals have been owned by MLB since 2002, when it bought the franchise while it was still the Montreal Expos. MLB is hoping that bids for the team will top $400 million.

It moved the team to Washington this season, after the city committed to spending $535 million on a new stadium along the Anacostia River waterfront, due to open in April 2008. Until then the team is playing in Robert F. Kennedy Stadium near Capitol Hill.
