TV Guide to get larger
Weekly television listing publication will grow to full-size magazine format, trim circulation.

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - TV Guide will grow to a full-size magazine format in October, the magazine's publisher announced Tuesday, but its readership will be getting smaller.

The weekly magazine will debut the new format with the Oct. 17 edition. But in addition to being a larger page size, the magazine will take steps to trim the circulation of what was once the nation's leading circulation magazine.

Gemstar-TV Guide (Research) said it will cut 3 million sponsored sales that are less than full priced and trim other circulation that is not economical. The introductory rate will rise from a current 25 cents an issue to nearly three times that. The magazine's newsstand price will be cut to $1.99, from today's price of $2.49, however.

It expects to have minimum paid circulation of approximately 4.5 million at the time the new format debuts.

The weekly listing of television shows will also change its production schedule to have more current news about programs. It will also have more color photos.

The magazine said a readership survey it conducted earlier this year found 60 percent felt that there was not enough news or information about their favorite TV shows and characters in existing media. It also found 90 percent said they would be more interested in reading TV Guide if they knew it offered in-depth reporting on TV shows and characters, plus reviews and recommendations.
