NEW YORK (CNN/Money) -
In China, high-quality personal care toiletries and consumer electronics lead the list of most desired American products, according to a survey released Tuesday.
A public opinion poll sponsored by UPS among urban consumers in the world's most populous nation found those responding would like to see a broader selection of U.S. products, such as shampoo, shower gel and toothpaste.
A majority of those polled also said they wanted a wide selection of American electronics such as digital cameras, laptop computers and digital recording devices.
"These findings show the urban consumer market in China has a great potential for foreign, and especially American, exporters," Fei-Ling Wang, International Affairs professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology, said in a statement
Other products in demand among China's emerging urban middle class included sneakers, jeans and t-shirts with American logos, CDs and DVDs.
"According to the State Department, U.S. exports to China have grown 80 percent since 2001, but this survey shows the Chinese would like even more quality American items," Kurt Kuehn, UPS senior vice president, worldwide sales and marketing, said in the statement.
Respondents under 40 expressed more interest in American books, music and videos; while the younger demographic, between 20 and 29 years old, were more attracted to consumer electronics, apparel and fashion accessories.
The items drawing the least interest were American cigarettes and liquor.
The survey, conducted by Research International, polled 1,140 Chinese consumers with high household income levels between the ages of 20 and 59.
