NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Gasoline prices eased for the fourth straight day Friday, edging lower from a record high set at the beginning of the week, according to travel club AAA's daily fuel gauge report.

The nationwide average price for a gallon of regular unleaded hit $2.601, down about a penny from the record set Monday at $2.614, according to AAA, the largest U.S. motorist organization, formerly known as the American Automobile Association.

The average price for regular unleaded is still about 72 cents higher than it was a year ago.

When inflation is taken into account, the recent record setting streak that began a few weeks ago is still below the all-time high set during the Iranian revolution in the early 1980s when gas prices were the equivalent of $3 a gallon.

Moreover, some analysts forecast that prices will continue to ease as the summer driving season winds down.

But prices many drivers think it will take more than a few cents to help them pay their fuel bills.
