NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - After peaking on Labor Day, gas prices continued a slow slide Thursday, according to AAA's daily fuel gauge report.

Thursday's nationwide average price of a gallon of unleaded gasoline was $3.03 per gallon -- one cent less than Wednesday's $3.042 per gallon.

The price has dropped slightly each day since reaching a new record of $3.057 on Monday, according to AAA, formerly the American Automobile Association.

A year ago Thursday, a gallon of unleaded gasoline cost $1.837.

Higher-octane gasoline prices have also dropped since Labor Day as the average price for a gallon of premium gasoline moved a penny lower to $3.334 from $3.346 Wednesday, AAA reported. A gallon of mid-grade gasoline fell to $3.216 from $3.229.

Of the 50 states and Washington, D.C., AAA reported the nation's capital had the highest average price at the pump, at $3.383 for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline. The travel club said pump prices in Mississippi were the lowest at $2.728.

Demand for gasoline typically falls off after Labor Day as the holiday marks the end of the summer driving season. Gas prices climbed over the past two weeks, peaking on the national holiday, after Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast.
