NEW YORK (CNN/Money) -
Gasoline prices fell below the $3 mark for a gallon for regular unleaded Monday, according to AAA's daily fuel gauge report.
The nationwide average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline fell to $2.967, over five cents less than Friday's average of $3.018. the travel club reported.
A year ago Monday, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas was $1.841, according to AAA.
After surging more than 38 cents to $3.01 a gallon after Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast, gasoline prices are expected to continue to retreat in the next few days, according to Trilby Lundberg, publisher of the "Lundberg Survey."
Lundberg said prices will fall back as driving demand continues to slow and refineries affected by Hurricane Katrina begin to come back online.
The survey was carried out from August 26 to Sept. 9 at about 7,000 gas stations.
The average nationwide price for a gallon of mid-grade and premium gasoline also fell. Mid-grade gas fell to $3.147 Monday from $3.203 Friday. Premium gasoline fell to $3.263 from $3.321, AAA reported.
AAA's "Daily Fuel Gauge Report" revealed that gasoline prices in the District of Columbia were the most expensive in the country, with the average price of regular unleaded costing $3.347. Gasoline prices in Mississippi were the cheapest, as the average price for regular unleaded was $2.651.
