The price of regular unleaded gasoline in the U.S. continued its downward slide Tuesday, according to the AAA's daily fuel gauge report.
The nationwide average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline fell to $2.956, one penny less than Friday's average of $2.967. the travel club reported.
The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas was $1.841 a year ago, according to AAA.
Releasing their own survey Monday of 800 service stations, the Energy Information Administration said the average retail nationwide gasoline price fell sharply in the latest week to $2.955 a gallon.
Gasoline prices have retreated since Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast two weeks ago, pushing the average price of gasoline up 38 cents to $3.01 per gallon, according to according to Trilby Lundberg, publisher of the Lundberg Survey.
In the survey, which was carried out from Aug. 26 to Sept. 9 at about 7,000 gas stations, Lundberg said prices should retreat as refineries affected by Hurricane Katrina reume operations and driving demand for gasoline slows.
Higher grade fuels such as mid-grade and premium gasoline also fell around the country. The average nationwide pump price for mid-grade gas fell to $3.139 Tuesday from $3.147 Monday. Premium gasoline fell to $3.253 from $3.263, AAA reported.
AAA's "Daily Fuel Gauge Report" revealed that gasoline prices in the District of Columbia were the most expensive in the country, with the average price of regular unleaded costing $3.319. Gasoline prices in Mississippi were the cheapest, with the average price for regular unleaded at $2.635.
